Small World

Brockport to Newark, NY: 55 miles

Day 23 Empire State Trail Ride: Tomorrow my last day!

Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

You never know when your web
Of connections will overlap!

Ride took us through "Park of Trails,"
In Rochester NY.
"Notorious for people getting lost.”
My good fortune—riding behind Nancy!
Not lost.

Paved trail had many "root ridges"
(My name for tree roots having grown
UInder pavement).

I had navigated a series of ridges.
Then one more I hadn't seen.
I hit it, clamped down on brakes,
Lost my balance.
Fell over into grass.

Coming toward me on trail,
Two women, who immediately stopped.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?

Do you need help?"

As I was lying on ground,
Untangling my feet & legs from under bike,
One woman looked down and said,
"I know you! WomanTours! Lake Superior!"

It was true!
We had cycled together in 2017
With WomanTours company,
Around Lake Superior.
Cathy lives in Rochester N.Y.

What were the chances!
Seeing each other again anyplace.
Especially on any bike trail,
With me making my way from under bike.

Nancy had been ahead,
As always, watching mirror.
"Where's Lin?"

When she saw women stopped on trail,
No Lin appearing,
Nancy came back to do whatever needed.
She joined conversation & explained this trip.

Small world encounter!
Amazing.

Much of today's ride on Erie Canal Trail.
Varied in surface, in numbers of users,
In development & amenities.

A good day.

Hugs,
Lin

Limerick:

My small world event — unexpected.
When from my bike seat, I ejected.
A cyclist I know,

From four years ago,
Looked down and recalled,
“We've connected!”

A really wonderful coincidence / did you think that if you hadn’t fallen, she probably would not have caught up with you and you would not have renewed your connection. I sometimes think “there really is “a plan!” Thanks for sharing with us all and the limerick is perfect. ❤️👍🎉

You are so right, Naurine! sometmes hard to trust that thought, but it’s good! 🙂

Wow! What a couple of encounters – one with an unseen ridge, another with a riding pal from years ago! I’m so glad you’re ok. Loving the pictures along with your travelogue. I’m getting a good sense of the place – the sign of a great author! Best wishes on today’s ride!

Hi, Lin,
That is a great story! Small world, indeed! You did not mention whether you were injured or not…I am hoping not. What an interesting place to ride bikes. Your trip is inspiring me to journey to these places myself. Thanks for that.
Linda

Thanks for your concern, Linda! Landing on grass very helpful. I’m well and sound. 🙂

Irene Mintenegro - August 25, 2021

So glad that you were not hurt on that fall. And so it was a good thing to happen since you ended up by meeting an old cycling friend. How interesting. Looking forward to seeing you back home safe and sound after such a successful adventure. Congratulations!!!🌹❤️
