Lake Michigan Ride—Day 12

Day 11: Newberry—Grand Marais, MI: I rode 30 miles

Day 12: Grand Marais—Munising, MI: I rode 35 miles

Thursday, June 14, 2018

I rode 30 miles on 13th,
Today, June 14th Flag Day, I rode 35
.

(You will see pictures of John G. wearing his Flag Day outfit)

Funny how reliant we become on having Wi-Fi- available.
At least ten people spent some time last evening
Feeling bereft & disconnected.

Ride yesterday ....
Out under grey sky growing darker.
Mid-morning, the sky dumped,
RAIN! So much rain!
For hour and half.

On busy highway at that point,
Two way traffic,
Very little shoulder,
Some logging trucks,
Spraying water,
NOT fun.

Area with no turn off possibilities,
Finally could dip into wide spot with alders, couple of pines.
Really didn't keep off rain,
Did get out of traffic.

As rain lessened,
Rode two miles to gas station, C/ store.
Whole group was huddled inside holding coffee,
Shivering, slishing in wet shoes.
Locals in & out—amused.
Our drippy rain coats & bikes entertaining.

Not to us, though,
We reminded ourselves that this is
Part of the fun we sign on for.

Sky cleared, ate tailgate picnic,
Started out again with increasing head wind.
? Part of fun?

My knee screamed at thirty miles,
Shuttled in to one of two rental houses,
Lodging group. Margaret cooked chili for all.
Her last evening with us.

Today had wonderful bike conditions.
Like life, each day is new adventure.

I rode 35 miles.
Shuttled in last ten.
That meant I "babied" my knee and
Had extra time with Margaret.
Drove to Miner Falls & Miner’s Castle,
Things I would not have bothered to see.

"Just 4 miles" off road for some attraction,
Too much to add the 8 mile round trip to bike mileage.

Tomorrow is rest day here in Grand Marais, MI.
Counting on complete day off bike to heal knee.

Things will settle into routine.

Hugs to each of you,
Lin

Love Grand Marias. We’ve been there a bunch of times. Once while having breakfast at the little train diner, the owner/server signed her novel for us—-“South of Superior”
Once spent a rest day there while biking the Tour da UP..
Reading your blog is an inspiration every morning, especially 7 weeks post knee replacement —thanks!

How nice to hear from you, Helene! I love those stories. I send thoughts for swift healing, may you be back to full biking power soon!

Irene - June 15, 2018

Your knee seems to need a lot of your love and attention. Anyway it allows you long rides and everyday is a different exciting one. You can’t complain about routine…
Keep going my friend! Hugs!

You are right on all counts! I think I can, I think I can… I will keep going, and appreciate the encouragement. We all need it, dont we!
