How Are You Cheering?

You know those long, steep hills?
In life, or on a bicycle?
They can be Tough!

I was riding one/steep hill this week.
First for some time.

My frequent rides these days:
Bike trails,
With very gradual inclines.
Nice for bicycles.
Haven’t challenged uphill pedaling.

We know this:
Steep uphill of any kind is daunting,
Discouraging!

Pick some marker to the side,
Some distance ahead,
Ride to that.

I know —
Those segments ridden
Add up to get you to the top.

What I hadn’t thought about is,
How important cheering for yourself
When you reach that marker.
And the next & next,
To the top.

Whatever “the steep hill”,
Your own cheers for you,
Inside your head or loud into the sky,
Are encouraging and important.

“Yep, you really did get to that marker”.
“Yep, all that effort moved you along”.
“Yep, you’re up to this.”
YOU got to the top!

As I make my way,
Even in inches,
I’m cheering me!
Hooray for our efforts.

Limerick:

I inch up some hill at a slow pace,
Since knowing I’ll get there, I’ll not race.
Each marker I clear,
My progress I cheer.
I get there, and view from a new space.

Hugs,
Lin
