Holiday Expectations

Wednesday, November 30th, 2022

The holidays that I’m expecting
Have portions that I am rejecting.
Sidestep the flurry.
Discard the worry.
What I want from this is connecting.

What is the holiday you want?

Best thing about a holiday—
Connection.
Really, I think it’s
Best about any day.

It’s what I like best about
Bicycle riding with Bob.
That’s a time of very few shared words.
Connection is our shared effort,
Awareness of the other’s
Energy level, pace, zest for the ride.

When spending a holiday with someone,
I have special opportunity for
Focused attention, listening,
Watching person’s eyes,
Seeing their “zest.”
Those give me connection.

Connections come from
Giggles over a crazy pun,
Movies where we cry,
Music we can sing to,
Food, when you’ve given me
Half your last peanut butter sandwich,
Working together to sort a garage
Full of 50-year-neglect.

All these give possibility for
Awareness,
Focus,
Quiet listening,
Combined energy—
Connection at its best.

Entering this holiday time of year,
I’m especially grateful,
Even poignantly grateful, for
Connections as they can happen.
My octogenarian heart has learned
The deep preciousness of connecting moments.

Telling you I cherish these connections,
Words are way too small for my gratitude.

Hugs,
Lin

For Thanksgiving? Key Lime Pie? Delicious.
Lucky old pair. Another Thanksgiving. Lovely connection.
Wrapping up a good day together.
Unusually warm Thanksgiving. Folks playing pickleball.

Who is the handsome young man?
I love to read your words, feeling a connection with you. Doing so makes me reconsider the bike trip next September – but only for a few moments.

The handsome young man is our youngest son. We loved that he came and shared part of the day with us. 🙂
