Helter-Skelter Start-Attempts
Wednesday, February 7, 2024
Are you starting something helter-skelter?
Outside for a bike ride today!
First of season for me.
Since I am a fair-weather-rider.
Here, midst warm weather on
South Padre Island, TX.
I’m renting what is available: Midsize tires.
One speed, coaster brakes, beach bike.
Funny start—
Getting rental bike and me
Set for first time ride together.
“I’ll ride down block to check it out.”
Returned with dropped chain.
Different bike, short distance,
Seat too low.
“I can change that. Quick release.”
Out a couple of blocks, I could feel breeze-in-my-hair.
No helmet!
Back again, while shop owner dug in back room,
Finding new, unused helmet.
Provides me with head protection and
Whole new “Look.”
Back one more time for
Top-off air to the tires.
Each time I returned,
All the work guys yelled to owner,
“Here she comes again!”
Sort of a “Marx Brothers” scene.
Once I remembered to back-pedal for brakes,
And quit squeezing my handlebars to stop,
My ride was wonderful.
I’m going to learn to love this bike.
Maybe getting underway with any activity
Takes a few helter-skelter start-attempts.
It’s worth it.
Hugs.

Limerick:
Setting up the first ride? Chaotic!
My drama seemed rather neurotic.
Once check points were met,
And I ceased to fret,
Such fun! Almost being hypnotic.
