Expectations for Fun

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024

Have holiday expectations blocked your fun?

I passed by our make-shift
“Technology Area” at back of sanctuary,
As I went into church this morning.

Spoke with skilled young woman handling
Sound & recording—She’s a Gem!

Actually, I don’t know what other roles
Her job entails.
I see her taking care of sound.

She told me that she is
“Eager for Halloween. That’s my favorite holiday.”
My jaw dropped and I asked “Why?”
“Because there aren’t Expectations, so
You can just have Fun.”

I thought about the expectations part.
How the expectations surrounding anything
Can build a framework of tasks and obligations
That wall out many happy times.

“Getting it right,” “On time,”
Matching some traditional family formula …
Can be pretty heavy.

Big end-of-year holidays are soon upon us.
Uuff!  I know I have dreaded
Seasonal expectations,
And have become an End-of-year-Grinch.

What if …. just, What if …
My expectation is
Fun and Appreciation?

Sounds like an approach for putting
Happy Times into this Seasonal Mix.
I’ll hang on to that possibility.

I hope you will too.

Hugs,
Lin

Limerick:

Surrounded with hard expectation,
A season can prompt abdication.
What if you name one,
As THE time of Fun?
Adopt it as your variation.
